Where to look

Buses and subways

Kyoto City Bus covers most of the city, with a flat fare in the central area. There are two subway lines: the Karasuma Line (north to south) and the Tozai Line (east to west). Private railways such as Keihan and Hankyu connect to Osaka.

Cycling

The flat city centre is ideal for cycling, and many residents use a bike every day. Park only in designated bicycle parking, as illegally parked bikes are removed and you must pay to collect them.

Kyoto Station is on the Tokaido Shinkansen, about 2 hours 15 minutes from Tokyo. Kansai International Airport is about 75 minutes away on the Haruka express.

Life in Kyoto moves at a gentler pace. Locals walk and cycle along the Kamo River, drink coffee in small independent cafes and shop at neighbourhood markets.

Nature and weekends

Arashiyama, Kurama and Mount Hiei offer hiking within the city limits. Lake Biwa, Nara and Osaka are all close by train.

The international community is smaller than in Tokyo but close-knit, centred around universities, language exchanges and cultural classes such as tea ceremony and pottery.
