How to calculate whether it saves money

Add up the normal fares for your planned journeys. Useful reference points for one way reserved seats in standard class:

• Tokyo to Kyoto or Osaka by Shinkansen: around 14,000 yen
• Tokyo to Hiroshima: around 19,000 yen
• Tokyo to Kanazawa: around 14,000 yen
• Kyoto to Hiroshima: around 11,000 yen

A classic round trip of Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima and back to Tokyo within a week often comes close to 50,000 yen, so the pass saves little or nothing. Add a trip north to Sendai or Aomori, or a return to Kanazawa, and it can start to pay off. If you are only doing Tokyo to Kyoto and back, it does not.

Nozomi and Mizuho trains

The fastest trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo lines, Nozomi and Mizuho, were not covered in the past. Since October 2023, pass holders can ride them by buying a special supplement ticket. The alternative is to take the slightly slower Hikari trains, which are covered and usually only 10 to 20 minutes slower between Tokyo and Kyoto.

Regional passes: often better value

JR companies offer regional passes that are much cheaper and cover the areas most visitors actually go:

• JR Kansai Area Pass for Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Kobe and Himeji
• JR Kansai Wide Area Pass adding Okayama, Kinosaki and the Kii peninsula
• JR East Pass for Tohoku or Nagano and Niigata
• JR Kyushu Rail Pass for Fukuoka, Kumamoto and Kagoshima
• Hokkaido Rail Pass

Many travellers are better off paying for one Shinkansen trip from Tokyo to Kyoto and then using a regional pass.

Using the pass

• Exchange or activate the pass at a JR office or ticket machine after arriving
• Reserve seats for free at ticket machines or offices, or online in some cases. Reserved seats are strongly recommended during Golden Week, Obon and New Year
• Luggage over a certain size requires a reserved oversized baggage seat on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen, so book one if you have a large suitcase

IC cards for everything else

Load a Suica, PASMO or ICOCA on your phone or buy a physical card. They work on subways, buses and many shops. For visitors, the Welcome Suica is available at airports.

The bottom line

The pass is still worth it for fast-paced trips covering long distances in a short period. For slower trips focused on one or two regions, buy individual Shinkansen tickets and a regional pass. Either way, travelling in Japan by train is a highlight in itself.
