How to buy it

The ticket is a subscription that renews every month until you cancel. You can buy it from:

• Deutsche Bahn in the DB Navigator app or on bahn.de
• Your local transport authority, such as BVG in Berlin, MVV and MVG in Munich or HVV in Hamburg
• Several third-party apps

It is a digital ticket on your phone or a chip card, and it is personal and non-transferable. Inspectors may ask for photo ID.

Cancelling

You can cancel monthly. In most sales channels, you must cancel by the 10th of the month for the subscription to end at the end of that month. If you miss the date you pay for the next month too. Check the terms of the provider you bought from, as a few have different deadlines.

The job ticket version

Employers can offer the Deutschlandticket Job. If your employer contributes at least 25 percent of the price, the transport authority adds an extra discount, and many people end up paying well under 40 euros a month. Ask HR in your first week. Some employers pay for the ticket entirely as a tax-free benefit.

Students and discounts

Many universities offer the ticket through the Semesterticket, either included or as a discounted upgrade. Some states also have social tickets for people on low incomes, pupils and trainees, often at much lower prices. Check your state's transport association.

Is it worth it for you?

A simple rule: if you use public transport more than about ten days a month in a big city, the D-Ticket usually beats buying single tickets or a local monthly pass. In Berlin, Munich and Hamburg, a local monthly pass used to cost more than the D-Ticket, so the decision is easy. In smaller towns where you mostly cycle, pay as you go might still be cheaper.

Practical tips

• Download your ticket before travelling, as mobile signal on regional trains can be patchy
• Keep your ID with you
• Regional trains fill up on summer weekends and holidays, especially routes to the coast and the Alps
• Remember that delays and cancellations are common, so leave extra time for connections
