How to open a bank account in Germany without a SCHUFA
No credit history in Germany yet? You can still open a current account in your first week. Here is which banks accept newcomers, what documents to bring and how to start building a SCHUFA score.
Almost every newcomer to Germany runs into the same loop: landlords want a bank account and a SCHUFA report, banks want a registered address, and the registration office wants a rental contract. The good news is that you do not need a SCHUFA history to open a normal current account (Girokonto). You only need a legal right to be in the EU, an ID document and, for most banks, an address.
What SCHUFA actually is
SCHUFA is Germany's largest private credit bureau. It records your accounts, credit cards, phone contracts and any missed payments. When you arrive you simply have no file, which is not the same as a bad file. Banks know this. What they check at account opening is usually your identity, your address and whether you are on a fraud list. A thin file matters much more later, when you apply for an overdraft, a credit card or a flat in a competitive city.
Your legal right to a basic account
Under the Payment Accounts Act (Zahlungskontengesetz), every consumer legally resident in the EU, including asylum seekers and people without a fixed address, has a right to a Basiskonto. This is a basic current account with a debit card, transfers and direct debits. Any bank that offers current accounts to consumers must offer it. If a branch refuses, ask for the refusal in writing and contact the financial regulator.
