Working part time on a student visa: Canada, the UK and Australia
How many hours international students can work during term and holidays in three popular destinations, what counts as work, and how to stay within the rules.
Most international students need some income while studying. Part-time work also helps you practise the language, build references and understand the local job market. But the rules are strict, and breaking them can end your studies. Here is how the three most popular English speaking destinations compare, followed by some general advice.
Canada
- During academic sessions: eligible students with a study permit can work off campus up to 24 hours per week. This limit was introduced in late 2024, replacing a temporary rule that allowed unlimited hours.
- During scheduled breaks such as the winter and summer holidays: you can work full time, as long as you were enrolled before and will continue after the break.
- On campus: no weekly limit, as long as you are a full-time student.
- You need a Social Insurance Number (SIN) to work.
Your study permit must include a condition that allows work. If it does not, you may be able to have it corrected.
