Travel insurance vs expat health insurance
Travel insurance and international health insurance are not the same thing. What each covers, when you need which, and how to avoid gaps when you move.
Many people move abroad with a travel insurance policy and assume they are covered. Often they are not. Travel insurance and expat health insurance are designed for different situations, and using the wrong one can leave you with a very large hospital bill.
Travel insurance: for trips
Travel insurance is built for people on a temporary trip with a home country to return to. It typically covers:
- Emergency medical treatment while you are away
- Medical evacuation or repatriation to your home country
- Trip cancellation, delays and missed connections
- Lost or delayed baggage and personal belongings
It usually does not cover:
- Routine care: check-ups, vaccinations, dental cleanings
- Ongoing treatment of chronic conditions
- Pre-existing conditions (unless declared and accepted)
- Maternity care
