Choosing a country is only half the decision. Life in Berlin is very different from life in Munich, and Osaka feels nothing like Tokyo. The city you pick will shape your rent, your career, your friendships and how quickly you feel at home. Here is a framework to compare options honestly.
Start with your non-negotiables
Before comparing, write down the three to five things that matter most. Common ones:
- A job market in your field
- Affordable rent for your household size
- Good schools or childcare
- An international community or a community from your home country
- Climate you can live with year round
- Direct flights home
Anything outside this list is a nice-to-have. It is easy to be seduced by beaches or nightlife and forget that you need a job.
