How to budget for a move abroad
The real costs of relocating: visas, flights, deposits, the first months before salary arrives and the hidden extras. A simple framework and worked numbers.
Moving abroad almost always costs more than people expect. Visa fees and flights are easy to find, but the months between arriving and feeling settled are full of deposits, duplicated costs and small surprises. A good budget splits the move into three phases: before you leave, the landing period and the first three months of normal life.
Phase 1: before you leave
Typical costs:
- Visa and permit fees: from under 100 US dollars to several thousand, depending on the country. The UK, Australia and the US are among the most expensive once health surcharges and legal fees are included.
- Document costs: translations, apostilles, police certificates, medical exams and language tests. Budget 300 to 1,000 US dollars.
- Flights: one way tickets, plus extra baggage.
- Shipping: sea freight for household items can be 2,000 to 8,000 US dollars. Most people sell or give away furniture and ship a few boxes instead.
- Leaving costs: ending a lease, final bills, pet transport if applicable.
